Black folks love to rally. We will rally to get you in office. We will rally to get you out of office. We will rally when we like the verdict and we will certainly rally if we don’t. The next best thing to a good party is a rally. To me a rally is like walking on a treadmill: you may get some great exercise, but you really don’t get very far.
This one really takes the cake though. Just when I think I have heard it all, now some group wants to have a rally for Paula Deen. I have to admit when I first heard about this I thought it was a joke. A bad joke, but a joke nonetheless. As I started reading about it, I found out that these people were serious.
Now, I was one of the first people to say that I thought all the uproar over Paula was overblown. Not that it wasn’t a big deal, but Blacks have more to worry about than Paula Deen. To many times we get sidetracked running after these side issues and take our eyes off the real issues in the Black community.
So when Paula went on her world “I apologize” tour, I was not impressed. Hey, she said it, she apologized for it, let’s move forward. Even in my most dismissive moment did I think we needed a rally? Are you serious? Yes, the group Black People for Paula are very serious.
Only Black people would be called names and then rally behind the person that called them the names. Who else would do this? I guess this just goes to show that there is really nothing that you can say to some people that will keep them from servitude.
This rally should really be something to see? I can just see it now. All the Blacks dressed up in slave attire. For the older Blacks we can have a watermelon and fried chicken contest. For the youth we could have a sagging and twerk contest. I think the highlight of the evening will be the pin the child support case on the baby daddy contest. Always a crowd favorite. We could truly have something for everyone.
This rally is worse than anything Paula said or could have said. Do we have to continue to bow and scrap to get someone’s approval? It really is sad and embarrassing. This much I do know that we have not reached our lowest level yet. I am sure real soon we will have the George Zimmerman support rally. Now that should truly be something to see.
